Fluoride treatment benefits

Fluoride stands as the most trusted mineral for helping protect your teeth from decay. Naturally found in many foods and water sources, its powerful benefits have been recognized for over five decades and are supported by numerous health and dental organizations.

Fluoride protects your smile in two important ways:

Topical fluoride works by penetrating the outer enamel of already erupted teeth, which strengthens them and makes them more resistant to cavities. We get this fluoride from daily dental products like toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Our caring dentists and hygienists at Aesthetic Family Dentistry often recommend children receive a professional fluoride application twice yearly during routine dental visits.

Systemic fluoride benefits both teeth that have erupted and those still developing beneath the gums. This fluoride comes from many foods and community water supplies. It’s also available as prescribed supplements in drops or tablets, typically recommended for infants and children through their teenage years. It’s important to watch fluoride intake closely in kids, since too much during tooth development can cause fluorosis—white spotting on the enamel.

While most people receive some fluoride from diet and water, sometimes it’s not enough to fully prevent decay. Your trusted dental team might suggest additional home or professional fluoride treatments if you have:

  • Deep grooves and pits on chewing surfaces
  • Exposed, sensitive roots
  • Fair to poor oral hygiene habits
  • Frequent consumption of sugary or starchy foods
  • Limited fluoride exposure
  • Reduced saliva flow due to health issues or medications
  • A recent history of cavities

Keep in mind, fluoride alone won’t stop tooth decay! It’s just one part of a healthy routine that includes brushing twice daily, flossing, balanced nutrition, limiting sweets, and regular dental visits.
