Request an AppointmentCommon reasons for tooth extraction
There are various situations where a simple extraction can ease pain or prepare your mouth for further dental care. Some frequent reasons include:
- Severe periodontal disease causing loose teeth
- Extra or retained baby teeth blocking adult teeth from coming in
- Orthodontic treatment preparation
- Removing a broken, damaged, or malformed tooth
- Extensive tooth decay that cannot be fixed with root canal treatment
What to expect during a tooth extraction
Before the procedure, your dentist will take X-rays to carefully plan the extraction. Then, a local anesthetic is applied to ensure you feel no pain. Using a tool called an elevator, the dentist gently lifts and loosens the tooth by easing the ligaments and gum tissue around it. Next, forceps are used to rock the tooth back and forth until it detaches.
Sometimes, a tooth may be stubborn and require breaking into smaller pieces for removal.
After extraction, gauze is placed in the socket for you to bite down on and control bleeding. If needed, stitches may be applied to close the area.
