Sleep apnea is a serious health condition affecting approximately 10% of men and 6% of women over 40 in the U.S. Those with sleep apnea experience repeated pauses in breathing during sleep due to airway blockage, sometimes hundreds of times nightly. This interruption can severely reduce airflow to the lungs.
Several dental devices can help ease this condition. These appliances work by slightly repositioning the lower jaw forward, opening the airway and restoring normal airflow. Many patients report that these devices stop their loud snoring, improve daytime restfulness, and make falling asleep more comfortable. Sleep apnea appliances tend to be most effective for patients who are not significantly overweight and serve as a practical alternative to CPAP therapy.
Request an AppointmentSleep apnea dental appliances come in two main types: fixed and adjustable. Below are some popular options:
TAP® 3 (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)
The TAP® 3 is the most compact and comfortable model in its family. This custom-made, two-piece appliance fits over your teeth much like a sports mouthguard. It gently pushes the lower jaw forward to keep the tongue and soft tissues from blocking the airway. The adjustable lower jaw positioner allows for personalized comfort. Its design accommodates the three primary types of malocclusion and permits the lips to close fully.
OASYS Appliance
Designed to reposition the base of the tongue forward by shifting the mandible gently, the OASYS appliance opens the oropharynx and strengthens the upper airway. An extension on the upper shield increases nasal opening size to reduce airflow resistance. This adjustable device is known for being comfortable and patient-friendly.
KlearwayTM Appliance
The KlearwayTM appliance targets obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. It allows incremental forward adjustments of the jaw by 0.25mm for optimal comfort. Made from VariflexTM heat-softened acrylic, it becomes pliable under warm water for easy insertion, then hardens to maintain the adjusted position.
Herbst Telescopic Appliance
This acrylic device uses clasps and friction grips to stay in place and features adjustable metal wiring. Its design permits vertical and lateral jaw movements without dislodging the appliance. Typically prescribed for mild to moderate sleep apnea, it also effectively reduces loud snoring.
